It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Marlene Pereira, on June 1, 2010. Many of you have already heard our sad news through word of mouth, but we wanted to send all of our family and friends a joint email with a few more details given that everything happened so quickly and suddenly.
Marlene was born in Calcutta, India, and always had many colourful stories of growing up in India with her brothers and sister. She married our father, Philip Pereira, in 1964, moved shortly afterward with him to Hong Kong and then they immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1975 with three young children, Robert, Michelle and Jill. Though she had a great passion for travel and was fortunate enough to see much of the world, she always looked forward to coming home to her beautiful Vancouver. Marlene was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma in 1990 and, after receiving aggressive chemotherapy and radiation back then, she successfully went into remission. She was very proud to let people know that she was a cancer survivor, and her strength was an inspiration to so many people. She was diagnosed, again, in 1997 with a carcinoid cancer near her vocal chord, but the thought of losing her voice was too much for her to bear that she successfully overcame the radiation treatments that she underwent at that time. It was only last February, 2009 that her lymphoma resurfaced. Bravely, Marlene underwent two different courses of chemotherapy over the past year, with courage and without complaint, all the while continuing to enjoy life to the fullest. Two weeks ago, she started experiencing sudden shortness of breath which prompted us to take her to Vancouver General Hospital. Her breathing became progressively worse, and 2 days later she was transferred to the ICU. After a brave fight, she finally succumbed to her illness, and passed away peacefully surrounded by her children.
Marlene will be remembered for her indomitable spirit. She embraced life to the fullest and her child-like enthusiasm was so very refreshing. Marlene is predeceased by her husband Philip, and she is survived by her children Robert (Lucia), Michelle (Arvind) and Jill (Rob), her granddaughter Olivia, her step granddaughters Kamara, Marista and Leandra, her siblings Joy, Eryx, Elmo and Loy and many other extended family and friends. Marlene waited so long to be a grandmother and the past 9 months brought her so much joy and contentment as she was able to spend time with her beautiful, bright-eyed Olivia. She will be missed by all.
A Prayer Service will be held at 7pm on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at St. John the Apostle Parish, 5457 Trafalgar Street in Vancouver. The Funeral Mass will be held at the same location at 11am on Friday, June 11, 2010, with a reception and burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation in memory of Marlene by mail at 660 - 686 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1G1, by telephone at (604) 877-6040 / toll-free 1-888-906-2873, or online at her memorial page http://donate.bccancerfoundation.com/goto/marlene.pereira.
Thank you so much for the many condolences that have already been extended through email, cards, phonecalls and flowers. We apologize that we have not yet been able to respond to everyone.
