"Team with a Heart's" - Homeless Lunch Program

September 20, 2011

We are pleased to inform you that with the generous support of our community members, we have enough funds to organize the second Homeless Lunch program in 2011. This will be organized on Sunday, September 25, 2011 from 9.00 am onwards at "The Door is Open" situated at 373 E Cordova Street, Vancouver. The Door is Open is part of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. We will be offering a nutritious meal to over 350 guests.

With your participation and assistance, The GOA Vancouver looks forward to making this event a successful and memorable one for all guests at The Door Is Open. This is a great community event and we encourage everyone to get involved in one way or another.

We are grateful to the many youth who have volunteered to help at this event. If you would like to volunteer at the next event please contact:

The GOA organized its first Homeless Meal Program for the 2011 year on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at The Door is Open, 373 E Cordova Street, which is part of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Vancouver.

We served 365 people a nourishing meal of chilli, bun, salad, cake and ice-cream. For the most part, guests at The Door is Open are served soup and a sandwich on a daily basis, so the change was very welcomed by the guests. The chilli (50 lbs. of ground beef plus all the vegetables) was prepared by Vijay Lobo, with the help of sous-chefs Shona Lobo and Heather Martin. Our experienced bakers, Lynette Pereira, Debbie D’Mello, Desirée Nazareth and Elsa D’Lima, baked 22 large chocolate cakes for the dessert. 22 volunteers, several of which were youth from our community, helped serve the meal.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors and volunteers. Without your support and help, the GOA would not be able to continue with this endeavour.

We would like to continue with this event on a regular basis and increase it to three events per year. We are planning on having the next event in September this year. Costs for the same are $500 to feed 300 people or $300 to feed 150 people. Your donations, in whatever denominations, are welcomed and will help us in our goals. Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to help us prepare the meals as well as serve them on the day itself. The GOA issues volunteer service letters to all participants. If you are interested in helping, please contact Heather at (604) 543-9536 or martin.heather@shaw.ca

The Goan Overseas Association organized its second Homeless Meal Program for the year 2010 on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the Surrey Urban Mission. The event went off without a hitch thanks to the 30 volunteers, dressed in red with Santa hats who worked selflessly with enthusiasm and a great team spirit. The choir added just the right festive spirit to the occasion.

We served our guests roast chicken, buttered vegetables, mashed potato, salad, dinner rolls, chocolate cake and ice-cream, tea and juice. A special thanks to the donors as well as to our cooks - Sudhir, Luke, Vijay, Vega and Debbie. Without you, we could never have done this.

The GOA would like to organize at least two more homeless meal programs in 2011 and are looking for volunteers and donors to achieve this. Students that participate in the program will be given volunteer participation letters.

If you can help in any way, please contact: president@goavancouver.com.

The "Team with a Heart" initiative is a collaboration with the First United Church Mission at Hastings & Gore, an organization that serves meals every day to the impoverished residents of the Downtown Eastside, the poorest neighbourhood in Canada. We provide a service to fulfill our mandate as a caring organization, by donating food and clothing with the very generous support of members and friends of the GOA Vancouver. The GOA thanks all the volunteers and the sponsors who have worked with a strong focus for this cause.

The lunch program prepared and served by volunteers, both from within our community and their friends, is undertaken up to four times a year, on a Sunday. The event focuses on the team effort in a busy kitchen while the bulk of volunteers welcome and seat with table service, serving close to 200 homeless men and women. The end of year lunch is animated with carol singing and usually brings out the musical talents of the homeless guests. The interaction with these less fortunate gives one an insight into some of the shortcomings of our society, while providing a short respite from the cruel street for a couple of hours. This is a great community event and we encourage our youth to get more involved in it.

The menu items vary and have included samosas, soup, chilli, sandwiches, chicken, meat sauce-pasta, garlic bread, cookies, desert and beverages. People from the various community groups (eg: Surrey, Richmond, Ladner, Vancouver, etc.) take turns hosting the meal production at their homes.

They also hold drives to collect socks, toques, shampoos, soap, towels and other sundry items which they hand out after the lunch. All contributions to this program are welcomed and appreciated.

Please come out and make a difference or enquire about sponsoring an event. We need your help..... Rides can always be arranged.

The "Team with a Heart" hosted our first lunch for 2009 on Sunday, 26 April at the First United Church. The event was sponsored by a couple (who prefer to remain unnamed) celebrating their silver (25th) wedding anniversary - with their family and friends attending to help serve lunch to the homeless.

Plans for 2010
We hope to have four events in 2010. However, there is a cost associated and sponsors are needed for this worthy cause - $500 per event, serving lunch and socks or other required items for over 200 people. This would be a wonderful way to commemorate an anniversary, milestone or other notable occasion. Monies can be sent directly to the GOA Vancouver, with a note of explanation.
